The Africa Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Green Investment Summit (AICIS) has kicked off in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing together government representatives, diplomatic communities, industry leaders, policymakers, and the private sector to discuss the pressing issue of climate change.
The Summit is expected to unlock Africa’s $12 trillion green economy potential and promote sustainable development across the continent.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, in his opening remarks emphasized the need for African nations to tackle climate change through innovation, strategic investment, and collaboration, stressing that the continent’s future prosperity depends on urgent action.
At the event held on Monday 11th August 2025, Akume highlighted Africa’s vulnerability to climate change, citing unpredictable farming seasons, rising sea levels, and industries adapting to new realities.
He reinstated Nigeria’s commitment to climate action, sustainable infrastructure, and green investment, aligned with the Paris Agreement and Africa’s Agenda 2063. The country’s climate action framework focuses on building resilience, empowering youth, and creating green jobs.
Also speaking, Farouk Ahmed, Executive Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, discussed Nigeria’s efforts to align its energy sector with global sustainability goals. Initiatives include prioritizing natural gas as a transition fuel, supporting the Dangote Refinery’s LPG production, and modernizing infrastructure.
The Ambassador of Cuba to Nigeria, Miriam Palmero, commended the summit’s focus on green investment and shared Cuba’s “Tarea Vida” climate action plan, which protects coastlines, promotes renewable energy, and fosters sustainability. She called for deeper cooperation between Africa and Cuba in technology exchange and clean energy.
