The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), Arc. Sunny Echono, said that the Nigerian education system is ranked number 25 in Africa and 189 in the world.
Echono made this known during the unveiling of a Workshop on Blackboard/TERAS Adoption and Usage in Beneficiary Institutions for Registrars, Bursars, Directors of Academic Planning and ICT, and Beneficiary Thesis Project Repository Managers in Abuja on Monday.
He noted that for Nigeria’s higher education sector to compete globally, it requires a strong culture of ethical research, open publishing and proper data governance.
The ES emphasized that revamping the sector is by leveraging on technology through the
Tertiary Education Research and Application Systems (TERAS).
Echono stated that the implementation of TERAS is a national project with global implications, as its aligns Nigeria with the intellectual standards with UNESCO.
Stressing that several platforms like Blackboard, thesis repository, and e-journals are designed to make Nigeria’s scholars more visible and respected world wide.
Achieving this he said, the visibility must be backed by quality, credibility, and integrity for the growth of the sector.
He urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the nation’s education sector becomes a living, breathing part of our academic culture, enabling better teaching, stronger research, cleaner processes.
“Where learning is no longer confined to the four walls or classrooms or tutorial as the case may be, from anywhere, but with outgrowth tool, device, everyone can access education, access educational content, participate and acquire knowledge and skills”, he added.
