The newly appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, Senator Aniekan Bassey, has vowed to support Nigerians living abroad, particularly those facing challenges in foreign countries.
Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday after his first meeting with the committee, Senator Bassey emphasized the importance of visiting Nigerians in diaspora and engaging with their representatives to address issues affecting them.
“The committee plans to visit at least one country per continent to interact with Nigerians and gather feedback on how to improve their welfare,” he noted.
Senator Bassey also stated that the issue of diaspora voting is a constitutional matter that requires the approval of two-thirds of the lawmakers in the National Assembly.
He said the committee will work with other relevant committees, including foreign affairs, judicial human rights, and special duties, to address issues affecting Nigerians abroad.
The lawmaker assured that the committee will do its best to support Nigerians in need, including those stranded or jailed in foreign countries.
