The Global Technology Company, Google has been accused of deliberately distorting the online profile of the detained Biafran separatist, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who made the accusation, described the alleged distortion of its leader’s profile as a coordinated propaganda campaign involving the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the British Government.
IPOB Spokesperson, Emma Powerful, in a statement on Friday alleged that the manipulation was aimed at shaping global opinion ahead of the October 10 ruling in Kanu’s trial before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Powerful said, “The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has observed with deep concern and absolute clarity the unfolding coordinated propaganda between Google, the BBC, and the British Government, designed to condition the minds of the international community ahead of the October 10, 2025 ruling in the case of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
IPOB further stated that Google has deliberately suppressed developments in Kanu’s ongoing legal battles, including the filing of a Magnitsky Sanctions lawsuit in Washington against what it described as “corrupt Nigerian judges,” while instead prioritizing BBC Pidgin reports that recycle discredited prosecution narratives.
“Google, which controls what the world sees and reads, has deliberately refused to publish current developments in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s trial… Instead, it has chosen to elevate biased BBC Pidgin reports that shamelessly recycle discredited prosecution evidence.
“These reports are deliberately promoted in Google search results to give the false impression that a prima facie case exists against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu when, in reality, the prosecution’s case has collapsed irretrievably,” IPOB alleged.
The group described the alleged distortion as “calculated censorship and collusion,” warning that it mirrored the pattern of information manipulation that preceded Kanu’s controversial abduction in Kenya in 2021.
IPOB recalled that in 2021, Wikipedia reportedly altered Kanu’s nationality from “British-Nigerian” to “Nigerian only,” which IPOB claimed created a false impression that facilitated his extraordinary rendition.
“This follows the exact template of 2021 before Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s illegal abduction in Kenya. Wikipedia, under the orchestration of the same Western interests, fraudulently altered Kanu’s nationality… Once the rendition was executed and it was too late, Wikipedia quietly reverted to British-Nigerian in September 2021,” the statement read.
IPOB alleged that such manipulations paved the way for his rendition “in direct violation of Nigerian law, the African Charter, and international treaties.”
The group further accused the British Government of active complicity, claiming London was working with Nigeria to undermine judicial fairness in the case.
“The hand of the British Government in this renewed campaign is unmistakable. London, acting through the BBC and tech proxies like Google, is actively assisting Nigeria to pervert the course of justice. It appears Justice James Omotosho has already been handed a pre-written script,” Powerful declared.
The BBC just like Google and the British Government could not be contacted for comments.
But Powerful added that Britain had abandoned its obligations to protect Kanu, who holds British citizenship, “in favour of protecting its colonial interest in Nigeria.”
IPOB said the alleged distortions were part of a plot to justify a “pre-arranged judgment” against Kanu on October 10. The group warned that Google, the BBC, and the UK Government would be recorded in history as complicit in undermining justice.
“IPOB states unequivocally that Google and the BBC have crossed the line from journalism into criminal complicity. Their censorship and distortion are active tools in the persecution of Kanu and the Biafran people,” the statement continued.
“We call on the United Nations, the U.S. Congress, the Human Rights Council, and the international press to hold Google, the BBC, and the UK Government accountable for their deception and complicity. IPOB will not remain silent while information is manipulated to aid tyranny and bury justice.”
