
The Defence Headquarters has announced the upcoming Fourth Edition of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Unity Basketball Championship (South-West Zone), set to take place from September 30 to October 5, 2025, at the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
Spark News Naija reports that, this prestigious annual championship is a key element of the CDS’s non-kinetic approach aimed at enhancing security while promoting unity, discipline, and teamwork among Nigeria’s youth.
Through the transformative power of sports, the tournament aspires to instill core values of peace, resilience, and nation-building across communities.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that the championship will feature 12 elite male basketball teams from the South-West and neighboring states, including a military team. Alongside the competitive matches, the event will also host Veterans’ exhibition games and halftime entertainment, ensuring an engaging experience for all attendees.
Participating teams will compete for various accolades, including cash prizes, medals, trophies, and certificates. Special recognition awards will also be presented, including the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Tournament Best.
The tournament’s objectives are to foster unity and peace through sports, engaging youth in positive activities and steering them away from social vices. The championship aims to strengthen civil-military relations through sportsmanship and fair play, while also identifying and nurturing emerging basketball talents who have the potential to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
“The Unity Basketball Tournament is more than just a game; it is a platform to unite communities, inspire the youth, and reinforce the values of teamwork and discipline,” emphasized the CDS. “Through non-kinetic approaches, we aim to promote a stronger, more united Nigeria.”
The grand finale and closing ceremony will feature an exhibition game with veteran players, musical performances, and the official presentation of trophies and medals to outstanding athletes and teams.
