Taiwo Awoniyi could be subject to further disciplinary action from the English Football Association following his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Nigerian striker, who came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, capped a commanding performance that boosted the club’s fight against relegation. However, his celebration has drawn scrutiny after he removed his shirt to reveal a religious message reading “God is the greatest.”
Awoniyi was immediately shown a yellow card for taking off his shirt — a standard punishment under football regulations — but the incident could attract additional sanctions due to the message displayed.
According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), players are prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal slogans during matches. The rule explicitly states that equipment, including undergarments, must not feature such messages.
“Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo,” the regulation provides.
It further notes that breaches may lead to sanctions imposed by the competition organiser, national association, or global governing body.
While the yellow card has already been issued, the Football Association may review the incident to determine whether further disciplinary measures are warranted.
Awoniyi’s goal was his latest contribution in a crucial period for Nottingham Forest as they battle to retain their Premier League status.
