The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a partnership with the United States Embassy to inform citizens about the new U.S. visa regulations, aimed at enhancing compliance among applicants.
The initiative was revealed during a joint press conference held by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr.
Idris emphasized the importance of this collaboration, highlighting that the United States remains one of the most popular travel destinations for Nigerians, who visit for various purposes, including education, tourism, business, and medical care. “Nigerians are recognized globally as active travelers.
The U.S. is frequently visited, reflecting the deep and long-standing ties between our two nations,” he stated.
In a statement by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant on media to the Minister, on Friday 8th August, the Minister noted that changes announced by the U.S. Embassy concerning consular responsibilities and visa application procedures are intended to enhance service delivery and efficiency while meeting the evolving demands of consular operations.
He expressed appreciation for the U.S. Government’s efforts to engage directly with Nigerian citizens, ensuring that accurate and up-to-date information is widely accessible.
U.S. Ambassador Mills underscored the significance of complying with visa laws as a cornerstone of mutual trust and respect between the two countries.
“Compliance with U.S. visa laws is essential for maintaining the strong relationship between the United States and Nigeria,” he remarked.
Mills further articulated that U.S. visas play a crucial role in fostering educational, business, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
The Ambassador reiterated the importance of adhering to U.S. visa regulations, cautioning that misuse of visas or the provision of inaccurate information during the application process can undermine the trust between the two countries.
“We encourage all applicants to provide truthful information and abide by visa terms to strengthen our bonds,” he said.
In addition, Ambassador Mills commended the Ministry of Information for promoting freedom of expression in Nigeria, aligning with U.S. values.
He also acknowledged the collaboration of various Nigerian institutions—including the National Orientation Agency, Nigerian Immigration Service, and Nigerian Customs Service—in raising public awareness of the new visa regulations.
Both leaders urged Nigerians to seek accurate information directly from the U.S. Embassy’s consular portal and assured that responses to inquiries will be promptly addressed.
This partnership reflects ongoing efforts to maintain and reinforce the strong ties between Nigeria and the United States while ensuring that Nigerian travelers are well-informed about U.S. visa protocols.
