NLRC: Senate committee recommend Prof. Yusuf for confirmation as commissioner

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, has recommended for confirmation the appointment of Prof. Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as a commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC).

Spark News recalls that in July 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, approved the appointment of Prof. Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as a Commissioner of the NLRC.

When the President’s executive communication was read on the floor of the Senate, it was referred to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative action.

Prof. Yusuf appeared before the Committee on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025, where he was asked questions and he gave satisfactory explanations regarding his life, work experience, exposure, qualifications, competence and suitability to assume the position.

Recommending Prof. Yusuf for confirmation, the Committee chairman, Senator Adeniyi Ayodele, stated, “We, the committee recommend to the Senate the confirmation of the nomination of Professor Yusuf Mwame Yusuf as Commissioner of the Nigeria Law Reform Commission”.

Before his appointment, Prof. Yusuf Mohammad Yusuf was a lecturer at the Faculty of Law University of Maiduguri, Nigeria. He obtained his LLB (Hons) degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and his LLM from the University of Lagos both in Nigeria.

For his PhD, Yusuf was at the prestigious Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, University of Dundee, Scotland where he bagged a PhD in Environmental Law and Policy for Petroleum and Natural Resources.

While undergoing his doctoral studies at Dundee, Yusuf was a tutor in the Environmental Law and Policy for Energy and Natural Resources module of the LLM Distant Learning programme of the CEPMLP.

Prof. Yusuf’s research interests are in the areas of international law of the sea, maritime boundary disputes, international environmental law and policy and international comparative petroleum law and policy. Yusuf has many publications to his name and has also attended and presented papers at many forums.
