The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) is working to increase local production of vehicle components, with the goal of reducing importation and boosting the country’s automotive industry.
Director-General Joseph Osanipin stated this during a meeting with the Senate committee on Trade and Industry, highlighting key reforms and policies aimed at achieving this goal.
The meeting discussed the challenges and progress in Nigeria’s automotive sector, including the push for a law to ban used vehicles, the need for a credit scheme to encourage new vehicle purchases, and the importance of sectorial lending.
The committee chairman, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, emphasized the need for local content development, particularly for motorcycles, and the formation of a committee to identify locally sourced components.
Osanipin disclosed that NADDC has set up a committee to work with local manufacturers, including those producing bicycles, motorcycles, and vehicles, to ensure they produce the required volume of components.
He emphasized that the goal is to increase the percentage of local components in vehicles, starting with motorcycles and tricycles, where most components can be sourced locally.
The NADDC is also working to address challenges faced by local manufacturers, including access to finance, to ensure they are competitive.
Osanipin expressed confidence that with the support of stakeholders, the goal of increasing local production of vehicle components can be achieved, ultimately boosting Nigeria’s automotive industry.
