The Headquarters, 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army on January 3, 2026, held the West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025 at the Obinze Barracks Parade Ground, Imo State, celebrating military tradition, cultural diversity, and professional excellence.
The Special Guest of Honour, Air Commodore DE Bello, Commander of the 511 Quick Response Group (QRG), Owerri, described the Nigerian Army as a powerful unifying institution that continues to harmonise Nigeria’s diverse cultures in the service of national unity and security.

He noted that the colourful cultural performances and activities displayed during the event reflected the Army’s enduring role in fostering cohesion across ethnic and cultural lines.
According to him, the Nigerian Army remains “one institution, driven by one purpose, despite the nation’s diversity.”
Air Commodore Bello urged officers and soldiers of the Brigade to sustain high standards of professionalism, discipline, and loyalty in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
He emphasised that commitment to duty and respect for civil authority remain critical to maintaining public trust and operational effectiveness.
In his welcome address, the Commander, 34 Artillery Brigade and Land Component Commander, Operation UDOKA, Major General IM Abbas, explained that WASA is a long-standing Nigerian Army tradition observed annually to mark the end of training activities while promoting unity, cultural integration, and stronger civil–military relations.
Major General Abbas traced the origins of WASA to the early 1900s, when the Nigerian Army emerged from the West African Frontier Force (WAFF). He recalled that the gallantry of WAFF troops in major military campaigns, including the First World War, earned them recognition and the privilege of celebrating their diverse cultural heritage.
He stated that WASA 2025 was designed to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity while creating an avenue for officers, soldiers, their families, and members of host communities to interact and strengthen mutual understanding.
The Brigade Commander further noted that, in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy of building a professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force, the 34 Artillery Brigade has remained actively engaged in addressing contemporary security challenges.
He acknowledged the vital role of family support and community cooperation in sustaining morale and enhancing operational effectiveness.
Major General Abbas expressed appreciation to the Imo State Government, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA (OPUK), Major General OA Fadairo, as well as traditional rulers and community leaders for their continued collaboration and support within the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility.
Spark News reports that dignitaries present at the event include representatives of the Imo State Government, senior officials from various security agencies, His Royal Highness Dr. EC Okeke, the Eze Imo, and renowned Nigerian football icon, Nwankwo Kanu (Papilo), among other distinguished guests.
The celebration also featured presentation of souvenirs, the ceremonial Beating of the Retreat, and the lighting of the traditional bonfire, which brought the WASA 2025 festivities to a colourful close.
