The Federal Government has applauded the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for offering fully funded scholarships to 50 Nigerian students in petroleum and mineral studies, describing the initiative as a major boost to human capital development and a reflection of strong bilateral ties between both countries.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the commendation on Monday in Abuja while receiving the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, during a courtesy visit.

Idris said the scholarship programme aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to strengthen key sectors of the economy through targeted capacity building.
He described the initiative as “a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future,” particularly in the petroleum and solid minerals sectors, which remain central to economic growth and diversification.
According to the minister, the programme’s planned continuity—benefiting 50 Nigerian students annually—will ensure a steady pipeline of skilled professionals to support critical industries.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its relationship with Saudi Arabia and accelerating the implementation of existing bilateral agreements, including pending Memoranda of Understanding in broadcasting and other sectors.
The minister also conveyed Nigeria’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, expressing hope for sustained peace, stability, and diplomatic resolution.
In his remarks, Ambassador Al-Balawi said the scholarship offer, conveyed through the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, covers tuition, travel, accommodation, and monthly stipends for the beneficiaries.
He noted that the initiative underscores the strong and genuine relationship between both nations, adding that it represents a meaningful investment in the future of Nigerian youth.
Al-Balawi further highlighted ongoing efforts to expand cooperation in trade and investment, describing Nigeria and Saudi Arabia as key regional economic powers with significant partnership potential.
Senior officials present at the meeting included the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Binyerem C. Ukaire, alongside directors and other top officials.
The development marks another step in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, with both countries signaling readiness to build on existing collaborations for mutual benefit.
