The Coalition of Road Safety focused NGOs in Nigeria (CORSAN) has commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Corps Marshal, Mr. Shehu Mohammed, for his open-door policy and commitment to collaborating with relevant organizations to enhance road safety in Nigeria.
CORSAN, which comprises member organizations such as the Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative and Road Accident Prevention Network Centre, applauded Mohammed’s exemplary leadership and vision for zero tolerance for corruption in the Corps.
According to Prince Julius Ache Ogu, Chairman of CORSAN’s Board of Trustees, Mohammed is the new face of road safety in Nigeria, and his leadership style has been instrumental in fostering partnerships and collaborations that promote road safety. CORSAN has assured the Corps Marshal of its support, commitment, and cooperation in executing road safety objectives, emphasizing that collaboration and partnerships are crucial to achieving positive outcomes in road safety administration.
However, Amb. Fidelis Nnadi, CORSAN’s Director of Media and Publicity, expressed concern over court judgments that ban road traffic and safety agencies, including the FRSC and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), from performing their functions. Nnadi argued that while these agencies may have overreached in some instances, their duties and functions should take precedence over human rights considerations, particularly when lives are at stake.
He cited the ban on the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services and FRSC, emphasizing that such rulings could demotivate officers from performing their life-saving duties.
Mohammed’s leadership has been praised for prioritizing staff welfare, introducing reforms that enhance the working conditions of FRSC personnel. His approach has led to measurable improvements in road safety efforts, with a notable reduction in road crashes and fatalities reported in some instances ².
