The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed strong condemnation over the unlawful arrest of Kebbi State journalist Hassan Mai-Waya for performing his constitutional duty as a journalist.
The NHRC emphasized that such arrest violates fundamental human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and the right to inform the public.
According to the Commission, Hassan Mai-Waya was detained for exposing the poor conditions at Kangiwa General Hospital in Kebbi State.
The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, stated that the detention of Hassan Mai-Waya was a clear violation of human rights.
However, Dr. Ojukwu welcomed the compensation of ₦200,000 paid by the Kebbi State government for his unlawful detention, which he described as a positive step in addressing human rights violations.
He also emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression and the right to information, and that the government should ensure that these rights are protected and upheld.
The NHRC Boss urged the Kebbi State government to take further steps to ensure that journalists and citizens can exercise their rights without fear of persecution.
