General Olufemi Oluyede has officially taken over as the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa.
The ceremony which marked a significant moment in Nigeria’s military history was held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, on Thursday 30th October, 2025.
The handover ceremony was marked by the signing of official handover notes, the decoration of General Oluyede with the Defence Headquarters insignia and Armed Forces medal, and the ceremonial lowering and presentation of the DHQ flag to General Musa.
Spark News reports that the event was attended by senior military officers, government officials, and distinguished guests.
Speaking after officially taking over, General Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility to lead the nation’s Armed Forces.
The new Chief of Defence Staff pledged to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, ensuring continuity and commitment to national security and unity.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as with other security agencies.
In his farewell remarks, General Musa reflected on his journey of service, highlighting the progress recorded under his leadership.
He thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and extended his appreciation to officers and men of the Armed Forces for their loyalty, sacrifice, and dedication.
With General Oluyede now at the helm, expectations are high that his leadership will strengthen the country’s security architecture, boost troop morale, and enhance cooperation among military formations.
Recall that 6 days ago President Tinubu appointed General Olufemi Oluyede to replace General Christopher Musa as the new Chief of Defence Staff. The new Chief of Army Staff is Major-General W. Shaibu. Air Vice Marshall S.K Aneke is Chief of Air Staff while Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff. Chief of Defence Intelligence Major-General E.A.P Undiendeye retains his position.
