The National Universities Commission (NUC) has formally recognised the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture, Science, Technology and Climate Action, Gembu, paving the way for the institution to become Nigeria’s newest specialised university focused on agriculture, science and climate resilience.
Presenting the Certificate of Recognition to a Taraba State delegation led by Governor Agbu Kefas in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, said the recognition increases the number of universities in the country to 313.
He described the establishment of the institution as a strategic step towards expanding access to higher education while harnessing Taraba State’s agricultural and environmental potential.
Ribadu said the university comes at a critical time when Nigeria is grappling with food security challenges and the growing impact of climate change on agricultural productivity.
According to him, the state’s decision to establish a university dedicated to agriculture, science, technology and climate action reflects a clear understanding of national development priorities.
“The decision by the state government to establish a university focused on agriculture, science, technology and climate action demonstrates a clear understanding of the issues we face. In many respects, the environment itself becomes part of the teaching and research infrastructure,” he said,
While noting that the institution’s location on the Mambila Plateau would require sustained investment in infrastructure to address accessibility challenges.
The NUC Boss, however, clarified that the recognition does not amount to immediate approval for academic operations.
He explained that the commission would conduct a resource verification exercise to confirm the availability of the required human and material resources before the university can commence admissions.
The ES also disclosed that copies of the recognition letter would be forwarded to relevant agencies, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), while urging the Taraba State Government to ensure sustainable funding for the new institution and continue supporting existing universities in the state.
Responding, Governor Kefas said the university would help bring national and international attention to the Mambila Plateau, a region he described as rich in agricultural and ecological potential but largely unknown to many Nigerians.
He assured the commission of the state’s commitment to complying with all regulatory requirements and strengthening both the new institution and Taraba State University.
The governor also revealed plans to shorten the university’s lengthy name to enhance its identity and administrative efficiency, reaffirming the state’s resolve to work closely with the NUC to build a world-class institution.
“We will continue to partner with you, take your advice and follow due process to ensure this university stands the test of time,” Kefas said.
