The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to partner with the Afrigroundnut Farmers Association of Nigeria (AGFAN) to boost agricultural productivity, create jobs, and accelerate economic growth.
This assurance was given by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, during a meeting with an AGFAN delegation led by its President, Abdullahi Muhammad Isa, in Abuja.
This was contained in a statement on Tuesday, by Chris Ugwegbulam, Head, Press and Public Relations to the commission.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the SGF described groundnut production as a vital component of Nigeria’s economic revival.
He noted that beyond being a staple food, groundnut holds strong potential for driving industrial growth and export earnings.
Akume recalled the historic groundnut pyramids of Northern Nigeria, which contributed significantly to the country’s GDP in the 1940s and 1950s, underscoring the crop’s enduring economic relevance.
He added that revitalising the sector could once again position Nigeria as a major player in global agricultural markets.
The SGF also commended the association for its support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and called on its members nationwide to sustain their backing, including ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He assured that the Federal Government would continue to support farmers through policies and programmes aimed at strengthening food security and economic development.
Earlier, Isa pledged the association’s readiness to work within a sustainable framework, stating that any government support—such as improved seedlings, fertilisers, and mechanised equipment—would translate into increased productivity and tangible economic returns.
He emphasised that mechanisation remains key to achieving large-scale farming, improving efficiency, and boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness in international markets through higher export volumes and foreign exchange earnings.
Isa further reaffirmed AGFAN’s support for the ruling All Progressives Congress, pledging to mobilise its members across the 36 states in support of the party and the Tinubu administration ahead of the next general elections.
